You don’t get a second chance to make a first impression, so make sure yours is a good one when it comes to your entrance hall.

Often ignored or designated a handy dumping ground, a hallway is a space we pass through briefly – but it can set the tone for the rest of the home.

Here are some ideas to help you make the perfect entrance!

  • Consider the rooms leading off your hallway and choose a complementary paint colour. It’s a high-traffic area, so opt for a quality, wipeable paint or wood panelling.

  • If your hallway is dark, go for white or a very light neutral, and add a mirror – great for you to double check your appearance before you walk out the door, too! Light walls and mirrors will both help create the illusion of more space if your hallway is small.

  • If you have space, consider a bench or a chair where people can sit to put on or take off shoes. A bench with built-in storage is also a handy solution for tidying away jumbled shoes.

  • Keep an umbrella stand by the door.

  • If you have a long hallway, run a length of pegs or hooks along the wall to avoid a jumble of coats in one place. A long shelf above is great for storing hats, scarves, and gloves. Use baskets or shelves below for shoes and boots.

  • Hang a wall cupboard with hooks inside – great for leaving your keys there so you no longer need to search for them throughout the house!

  • With lots of toing and froing, make sure you opt for a smart choice of hardwearing flooring, and add a fun doormat to counter any muddy footprints!
