Friluftsliv – free-looftz-leev– is the new open-air living trend from Norway that looks set to be big in 2021.

Ok, so we may have only just got used to pronouncing Hygge (it’s hyoo-guh, in case you were still wondering), but now we’re going to have to get used to a new Scandinavian lifestyle term that’s even harder to get your tongue around.

Friluftsliv – free-looftz-leev– is the new open-air living trend from Norway that looks set to be big in 2021.

Where hygge is all about cosying up in your jim jams with a fluffy blanket and a hot chocolate, Friluftsliv focusses on time spent outdoors – the perfect antidote to all the time we’ve had to spend indoors lately.

In Norway, Friluftsliv may be all about skiing and camping in a snowy wilderness, but the beauty of this trend is that it can translate just as easily to a local park or even your own back garden.

Spending time outdoors has been shown to boost the mood, lower blood pressure and reduce stress, and that can be done on a simple walk or cycle around the block.

Winter needn’t be a deterrent, either. Take some chairs and rugs outside to create a cosy space on the frost-tipped grass or patio and enjoy your hot chocolate under the stars. If you have the space, you could invest in a fire pit or patio heater - or simply just add extra layers of clothing and snuggle up under a pile of fluffy blankets.

And if winter evenings outside still aren’t tempting you, why not embrace the outside inside, by introducing plenty of house plants or a botanical themed décor?

The positive mindset of Friluftsliv to winter can help bring a little light into the darkest season, and we could all do with a bit of that – even if we can’t pronounce it.
