October is one of the richest months of the year for colours, with warm greens and browns lifted by trees aflame with warm russets, reds and golds.

Reflecting those comforting shades of autumn inside the home creates richness and warmth – perfect for those dark evenings when there’s nothing better than drawing the curtains, lighting the candles and cosying up in front of the telly.

We’ve chosen our top five colours for October. Even the smallest touch can make a big impact, from cushions and throws to a statement rug or accent wall.

Rich red

Classic burgundy and warm russet shades are perfect for October and more richly comforting than the brighter, bolder reds of Christmas.

Opulent orange

Orange might not be the first colour you think of for your home, but it works especially well as an accent colour, bringing a touch of style without having to make a full commitment. Bright, zingy orange works perfectly to bring a pop of brightness to a sofa, while burnt or bronzy oranges can look gorgeous on an accent wall.

Gorgeous green

Green is the new go-to colour for the home, no matter the season – but darker shades work even better for autumn. More than any other colour, it’s perfect for connecting with nature and the outdoors. To tone down green for the autumn, choose a shade with a grey base.

Yummy yellow

Ok, so a bright sunny yellow might not set quite the right tone for autumn, but warm buttery yellows or deep burnished golds will bring a lovely glow to a softly lit room.

Beautiful brown

Brown might sound off-putting, but there are some gorgeous shades out there in everything from soft caramel to rich coffee and there’s nothing better for creating a cosy, comforting space in your home. Dark brown everywhere can look drab and heavy but can add real drama in small spaces or on accent walls. Pair with brick red or blue for a classic combination or choose hot pink or fresh aqua if you want to keep it modern.
